Replacement Handles For Windows
Window handles are one of the most frequently used elements of your double glazed windows. Over time, they can get worn out or rusted.
To replace a UPVC window handle, you will need to know the spindle length of your existing handle and its fixings. This can be done by examining the base of the handle that was previously used.
Handle
Over time, uPVC window handles and locks may be damaged by wear and tear, or even deliberate damage. It could be that the lock or handle becomes difficult to close or open, or that they are not locked at all. If this occurs, it might be tempting to replace the whole window unit, but it's not always necessary. In many cases an upgrade to the handle or lock is all that's needed.
The espagnolette design is the most popular uPVC window handle. The handle is equipped with an outer spindle that extends out of the handle. It slots into a gearbox which operates the multipoint locking system inside the window. It's important to match the correct handle and lock to your windows to ensure they work together correctly, which is why we carry a broad variety of replacement handles for all types of uPVC windows.
When replacing a uPVC window handle, it's a good idea to use screw cover caps in order to keep the screws secure and shield them from corrosion. You can also make use of a spacer, washer or other sealant to create an even tighter fit. A screw cap will prevent debris and water from getting into the handle, causing damage.
After the handle has been removed from the window, it's an ideal idea to scrub the spindle of the new handle and also the threaded part of the bolt. This will ensure that the handle fits and functions correctly and also stop dirt from entering the multipoint lock.
The next step is to install the uPVC handle. It is crucial to adhere to the directions that came with the new handle and take a look at the old one before you begin in order to understand how to do it correctly. Most of the time, the process is very straightforward. However, if you experience any issues that aren't covered in this article It is recommended to contact our team for additional assistance.
It's also worth noting that if replacing a uPVC handle with a cockspur (also called an Espag handle) you must determine the height of the steps on the window in order to determine the proper size of handle. The step height refers to the distance from the base or frame of the window up to where the cockspur's cockspur's apex of the handle sits when installed.
Hinges
If your windows are beginning to close and open with a visible gap, this can be caused by the hinges not aligned with the frame. This is usually an easy fix and can be solved with a new set of replacement window hinges. We offer a range of options and modify the dimensions of the hinges to fit your requirements.
We can provide a variety of hinges for upvc and timber windows. They are available in a range of colors to fit with your existing window frames and include all fixings needed for fitting. If you have a double glazed window that has an older style of hinge, we are able to offer a selection of repair screw packs that allow you to cut the old thread form back into the frame.
We have a variety of different hinge types, from traditional casement window hinges that can be used with a standard or tilt and turn handle, through to fire escape egress hinges that are suitable for use on larger sized side hung windows. These hinges are designed to fully open in a crisis and come with an easy-cleaning feature. We also have hinges with restricted-egress that are designed to restrict the opening angle of windows to 100mm maximum. This is ideal for households with children.
Squeaky hinges may be an indication that the hinges must be replaced. It's typically due to metal rubbing against metal. If the noise is still present an ounce of lubricant will help.
Window plumbs help avoid unnecessary binding, this means that the operating sash of the window is in line with the frame, which ensures that it opens and closes correctly. A window that's not plumb may have difficulty closing and opening or becoming damaged over time, causing problems with the seal and appearance of the window.
You can purchase replacement hinges for windows made of upvc in imperial or metric sizes. In general the size in metric is a bit more precise, but this is not really evident once they are installed. The first corner fixing holes on the track and arm are of a standard size, but the rest can vary in length depending on the original hardware. We recommend that you measure the hole spacings on your existing frame prior to purchasing any hinges made of upvc to ensure that they are the right size.
Crank
Over time, wear and tear can cause damage to your window handle, lock or crank mechanism. This can affect the ease of opening and closing your windows as well as compromising their security. If your window is difficult to open or shut, or if you hear a clicking sound when you turn the handle, it could be a sign that you need to replace the mechanism. If you're not able to secure your window or the multipoint lock is damaged, it may also be worth considering replacing this component of the hardware, too.

A new window crank can easily be replaced with little effort, but it's crucial to make sure you buy the correct size replacement. Ensure that the replacement is the same height as the old one and can be measured by measuring the distance between the crank arm guide bushing and the notch in the track running across the bottom of the window frame. You can also measure the spindle length on the handle you currently have to determine the size of the replacement.
The type of window handle you have will determine what kind of crank mechanism is required for your casement or awning windows. Espag handles are equipped with a spindle that is a mental component on the back that is connected to the window frame and drives the window mechanism, while cockspur handle have pegs that are fixed to the frame by screws of three or four that are inserted into the frame and sash.
Once you've found the correct replacement, it's easy to fit. First, take off any trim mounting screws from the casement cover of your window and carefully lift it off to reveal the insides of your window operator (Photo 1). Compare the new operating lever with the old one and remove any rusted trim screw. Then screw the replacement to the window frame, replacing any screws that were rusted or bent, then put the casement cover over the mechanism.
